ABOUT SARAH HIRSCH

Sarah Image.webp

I am a lyricist, composer, and bookwriter based in Silver Spring, MD.  I majored in music at Yale University and received an MFA in book and lyric-writing from NYU's Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.

I have written 9 full-length musicals, all of which have received readings and several of which have received productions and won awards.  (See my Writing Resume below.)  My songs have been performed at Lincoln Center, The United Nations, 54 Below, The Duplex, The Metropolitan Room, The Davenport Theatre, Barrington Stage, Mana Contemporary Arts Center, Anacostia Arts Center, and Axelrod Performing Arts Center.  Two children's musicals of mine have been published.

FUN FACTS ABOUT ME:

I started taking piano lessons at age 5 from my grandmother.  Thirty years later, she is still teaching piano, and I'm hoping my sons can take lessons from her when they are old enough.

I wrote my first musical, ANGEL ANGEBELLE, in fifth grade -- it was a (fairly fraught) collaboration with my younger sister, about an angel who is teased by the other angels for being clumsy.  A local theatre group performed it, and the experience was so thrilling that it inspired me to continue writing musicals.

I love word games.  In fact, one of the best presents I've ever received was a custom-made 7x7 Boggle game from my husband Philip.  (Once you've tried it, there's no going back to regular Boggle!)

I served as a lyrics assistant to Broadway lyricist and composer William Finn for the production of his and James Lapine's musical LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE at Second Stage in 2013.

In the past decade, my husband and I have lived all over the country -- in Manhattan; State College, PA; Austin, TX; Santa Clara, CA; and now Silver Spring, MD (where we hope to stay).

In addition to writing personalized songs, I like to paint personalized portraits.  During the pandemic, I started making acrylic portraits of each new baby born to my friends.
